SPORTS REPORT

The high school baseball and soccer playoffs began in earnest last night and we’ll start on the pitch, where it was a very good night for the Lowco.

Five area boys soccer teams entered and four marched on, including the Bluffton Bobcats, who dominated possession all night and cashed in two late goals for a 2-nil win to avenge last year’s playoff loss to Lugoff-Elgin.

On the other side of the Class 4A bracket, May River’s boys took care of business on the road in a 5-nil win at West Florence, and Beaufort High came home from Aynor with a 2-nil victory to advance in Class 3A. We’ll get a Lowco-on-Lowco matchup in round 2 of the Class 1A boys bracket after Whale Branch beat Bethune-Bowman 6-1 to earn another shot at crosstown rival Bridges Prep.

The seeds held for all our area squads on the baseball diamond last night. In Class 4A, May River won 8-2 at home against Irmo behind a strong six innings from Logan Hargis and a balanced attack up and down the lineup, earning a trip to top-ranked North Myrtle Beach after the Chiefs rallied late for a 3-2 win over Bluffton. Terrific outing from Miles Frye to keep the Bobcats in it until the end.

Bluffton and Hilton Head High will face elimination games Wednesday, after the Seahawks lost 13-5 at West Florence in their opener.

Defending SCISA 2A champion Patrick Henry opened the postseason with an 11-0 rout of Dillon Christian and will look for the sweep tonight, and John Paul the 2nd lost 6-2 at Florence Christian to drop into the elimination bracket in SCISA 3A.

And the boys golf teams from May River, Bluffton, and Hilton Head all qualified for the Class 4A Lower State meet with their scores from Monday’s region meet at Hilton Head Lakes, where James Island took the team title and May River’s Landry Williams was the medalist with a scorching 1-under 71.
