SPORTS REPORT

Hey, it’s time for Last Night in the Lowco on WHHI, powered by LowcoSports.com!

Three more Lowco area high school basketball teams punched their ticket to state championship games last night, and at least one of them is guaranteed to bring home some hardware. We’ll find out which one on Saturday, when the girls from Hilton Head Christian Academy aim for their sixth consecutive state title with familiar rival John Paul the 2nd as the only team standing in the way.

The five-time defending champion Eagles rolled into another title game with a 64-39 rout of Palmetto Christian on Thursday, as Mya Hutchinson poured in 24 points and Devon Yarde added 19 in another dominant effort by the dynamic backcourt duo.

Hutchinson and Yarde led HHCA to two wins over the Golden Warriors this season — a 19-point victory at JPII and a 14-point win at home — but they will have to do it again after the Golden Warriors held off Orangeburg Prep 46-41 in the other semifinal to punch their ticket to the state championship game for the first time. Cayce Graves and Lily Termini each had 13 points and seven rebounds, and star Brady Mahoney went over 1,000 career points in the historic win for JPII.

Hilton Head Prep’s boys will also get a shot to defend their SCISA 3A boys title after the Dolphins used 16 points from Jason Britschge and 15 from Billy Barron along with another strong outing from Ben Frey to axe Oakbrook Prep 49-32. The Dolphins will face Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach for the title Saturday in Sumter.

We also had a couple early-season donnybrooks on the lacrosse pitch, as Hilton Head’s boys dropped an 11-10 thriller to Richmond Hill and Bluffton’s boys rallied from a 14-7 deficit to force overtime before stunning Beaufort 17-16.

For LowcoSports and WHHI, I’m Justin Jarrett. Until next time, Go Lowco!
