Jonathan Haupt: 9th Annual March Forth | Pat Conroy Literary Center

The nonprofit Pat Conroy Literary Center’s ninth annual March Forth will be held on Saturday, March 1, and Sunday, March 2 in Beaufort, Port Royal, and St. Helena Island. This special event commemorates the anniversary of Pat Conroy’s passing on March 4, 2016, with programs on the major themes of his writing and teaching life, including social justice, inclusivity, conservation, education, truth-telling, and storytelling.

March Forth is a collaboration between the Conroy Center, the Penn Center, the National Park Service, NeverMore Books, and DAYLO: Diversity Awareness Youth Literacy Organization

3/1, Saturday programs:
1) Teddy Bear Picnic Read-Aloud at the Port Royal Farmers Market, hosted by DAYLO. Featuring Read with a Ranger, with National Park Service Ranger Katherine Freeman (9:30-noon, free)
2) Myths of the FBI: What Writers Get Wrong—workshop and presentation led by retired FBI special agent Dana Ridenour and retired FBI profiler Gene Rugala. At the Conroy Center (10:00 to noon, $60)
3) Live-streamed virtual conversation with author, educator, and advocate Ashley Hope Perez, editor of Banned Together (anthology about youth advocacy in response to censorship). In conversation with Jonathan Haupt, Conroy Center executive director and Julia Garnett, ALA Banned Books Week Youth Chair twice honored at the White House by Girls Leading Change. 3/2, Sunday programs (10:00 to 4:00, Penn Center):
1) Nature Walk, led by Jake Zadik, new naturalist for Brays Island
2) Lunch catered by Magnolia Café
3) Presentation on Harriett Tubman, by Dr. Edda L. Fields-Black, author of Combee: Harriett Tubman, the Combahee River Raid, and Black Freedom during the Civil War
4) Conversation with novelist Kimberly Brock, author of The Fabled Earth (historical novel about Cumberland Island, GA; finalist for the Townsend Prize). In conversation with Jonathan Haupt and Julia Garnett
