According to a Feeding America study, there are 20,000 people in our three-county area who are food-insecure. Several thousand of them live and work on Hilton Head Island alone.
Food insecurity means a lack of consistent access to enough food for every person in a household to live an active, healthy life.
We, and the now 55 food pantries and soup kitchens we serve, believe this number is even higher, as recent high inflation is bringing more people in search of food to make ends meet.
There are several ways the community can help us tomorrow:
1. Our Post-Vacation Food Donation tourist food drive every Saturday from 8 to 11 am in the Grayco parking lot on Palmetto Bay Road on Hilton Head Island. About half of the people stopping to drop off food lately have been residents!
2. Hilton Head Island and Beaufort residents can put non-perishable foods at their mailboxes tomorrow for the postal carriers to pick up during their "Stamp Out Hunger" program.
3. Food can also be dropped off at the Deep Well Project from 1 to 4 pm on 80 Capital Drive. Bluffton Self Help will also be accepting donations at their location from 9 am to 1 pm.
