May is American Stroke Month
• For American Stroke Month, the American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association, is focused on raising awareness about the F.A.S.T stroke warning signs and taking action to prevent a future stroke. Together, we can change the future of health and transform lives.
• Stroke is the fifth-leading cause of death and a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the U.S., despite stroke being largely preventable, treatable, and beatable
• Strokes can happen to anyone, even young people. Certain groups are at a higher risk for having a stroke, including black Americans and women.
• Recognizing the stroke warning signs and calling 911 immediately may make the difference being a strong recovery or long-term disability; survival or death
• F.A.S.T Stroke Warning Signs:
o F – Face Drooping
o A – Arm Weakness
o S – Speech Difficulty
o T – Time to call 9-1-1
• High blood pressure is a leading cause and controllable risk factor for stroke and heart disease. You should have your blood pressure checked and see your doctor regularly to monitor your blood pressure and other risk factors
• Healthy lifestyle behaviors, such as good nutrition, quitting smoking, and being physically active can help prevent individuals from having a first stroke.
