Robin Storey: Great Horned Owls in Eagles' Nest | Hilton Head Island Land Trust

Great Horned Owls Take Up Residency in the Eagles' Nest!

Hilton Head Island Land Trust is a non-profit organization with a mission to preserve and protect the natural habitat and significant historical parcels of land on Hilton Head Island.

We own the historical property, Fort Howell off Beach City Road, and have conservation easements on multiple other properties on the north end of the island.

Last year, Hilton Head Island Land Trust premiered the Eagle CAM viewing Harriet and Mitch and their two eaglets. Unfortunately, both eaglets succumbed to the Avian Influenza and prematurely ended the season.

This nesting season we have new residents – two Great Horned Owls. THE GHOs are known for taking over existing nests. Now The Eagle CAM is the Raptor CAM as we have seen eagles, ospreys and owls in the nest.

The Owls are displaying all the signs of nesting, and we are hopeful they will have eggs and the viewers will be able to watch the owlets grow. One Brood per year and typically have 1-2 eggs but can be up to 4-6. The female does most of the incubation with the male bringing food to its mate. Incubation period is 30-37 days. The owlets wander outside the nest on tree limbs in about 5 weeks and can fly at about 9-10 weeks. Females are larger in size but the male has a larger voice box and deeper voice.

How to view the Raptor CAM? Go to www.hhilandtrust.org. They are nocturnal, so until we have eggs in the nest the best time is around 4-7pm, off and on during the night and around 6:30-7am.

Sponsors of the Raptor CAM: Lead Sponsor is Russell P. Patterson Law Firm and Corporate Sponsor is Hargray.

Upcoming event: Our annual fundraiser is April 22nd with golf, dinner, silent auction and wonderful speaker of the Director of Education with The Birds of Prey Center where our eaglets were taken when fallen ill. We will have feathered friends coming during the presentation.
